Helping Your Child Deal With Asthma

Asthma is a condition that is often difficult for adults to handle. It is even more difficult for children. It is also a pity that children have to live with asthma; getting deprived of participation in some activities, selected foods, and places that they go to without even knowing why. But asthma can be managed by some adults. Children can learn to manage it too, but not without help and support from you.

The methods that adults use for dealing with their asthma can also be applied to kids. But for it to be effective, it should be accompanied by your undivided attention, patience, and vigilance. The child has a right to understand the dangers and complications that come with asthma, even at an early age. Be a teacher and cite examples that are easy to understand so the child does not get confused.

It is important that you understand your role as a parent since you will play a big part in your child’s asthma management. Depending on how old your child is, you can teach them to remember the details about his or her condition. One of the first steps is to have them remember the names of their medications and how they help their conditions. For instance, grab the inhaler if they feel tightness in the chest or breathing difficulties.

Knowing your child’s triggers and letting them know about it will also help them by learning which things they should avoid and which ones are safe. Also, as early as 4 or 5 years old, they should already be taught on which medications they can take depending on what they are feeling and when they should take it. Teach your child how to manage his/her asthma and how to communicate with others when they start to feel any of the symptoms.

Even after telling your child all he or she needs to know, you still have a part to play. You also need to know the triggers of your child’s asthma. It can very well be your doing; for instance, you’re a smoker. Another thing that you should do is to know how to use the peak flow meter so you can tell if there’s any airway constriction.

It is important that as early on as possible, you will be able to make your child understand anything and everything about the condition that they have, making it easier for you and your child to cope and deal with asthma.
