ETHICS VIS-À-VIS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

alexsarmiento.jpgTechnology, as we all know, has gone beyond the foresight of a common human being.  Never in one’s imagination could a man duplicate himself more than how natural twins could possibly look alike.  At a click of a “mouse,” a man will find himself hovering in some other parts of the globe.  In a split second, events anywhere may now be made known to us right inside our “pockets,” and many other more.  All these, in the name of progress through Science and Technology.

But let us forget the world in which we are living.  Things may have been moving so fast that we might be overlooking our own future.  As they say, “SCIENCE WITHOUT ETHICS IS CRUELTY AND ETHICS WITHOUT SCIENCE IS STUPIDITY.”  By this, we see the need to balance between Scientific Technology with Ethics.  The convergence of emerging ethics in the use of Science and Technology in the 21st century is undeniable. Scientific progress and the use of technology should not however circumvent human rights.

Simple things like bullying or intriguing another with the use of cell phone technology is so rampant.  Certainly, this is not suppose to the use of this technology, otherwise, we will be prying into the privacy of our fellow human beings.  Worst is when somebody frustratingly attempts to break a marital relationship by sending false text messages to a wife that the husband has a paramour, or vise-versa.  Unthinkable!
Let us look around us and we see some very busy people.  Some seated in front of their computer units.  Comes the stake holder, we often hear them say, “come back next time, I’m busy.”  Busy indeed, surfing the internet about things unrelated to their jobs.  Imagine ourselves doing this while leaving our students alone doing their assigned tasks without us supervising them.  We are depriving them our time, their much needed quality time.  Surely, this will result into a doubtful quality of education. We are indeed depriving them of their right to quality education and this is never the intention of the scientists and researchers who gave us this technology.  Not even those who granted us the privilege to use this technology.

These are just few unethical practices common around us.  Countless more need not be elaborated.

Have a heart! Let us use science and technology with utmost care for this is capable of destroying human lives. The culture of the heart, as the center of human personality should prevail.  Let us use the culture of the heart with social standards based on family values.  Our school culture, I guess we know these drives and define our school structure.  Let us help one another in making our school system an ideal one.  Ideal in the sense that it must be transformed as an extension of the family home, knowing fully well that this is possible.

In conclusion, yours truly believes that there is a need for a fundamental shift from our present state to an ideal state.  That of transforming from irresponsibility to trustworthiness, laziness to diligence, betrayal to loyalty, falsehood to truthfulness, prejudice to empathy, and disbelief to criticism.
